Old Town High School Golf Team

General Information
The Old Town High School and Orono High School golf teams are coached by Hidden Meadows Golf Course owner and PGA Professional Joe Perdue. The team is made up of boys and girls, and there are no cuts. Practice begins in the middle of August. Anybody that is interested in turning out should contact Old Town Athletic Director Brett Hoogterp or Orono High School Athletic Director Mike Archer. Or contact Coach Perdue at Hidden Meadows GC. You don't have to be a great golfer to turn out for the team, you just have to be interested in the sport, want to become a better golfer and be willing to give it your best effort.

2012 Team

After getting thumped in the first match of the season, Old Town re-grouped and went on to tie for first place in the Central Division of the Penobscot Valley Conference with a 9-2 record.

Senior Hazen Dauphinee led Old Town with a 39.0 scoring average. He took medalist honors in five matches throughout the year, picked off the final qualifying spot for the Maine State High School Championship in a memorable three hole playoff, and had a great overall season. Senior Garrett Libby followed Dauphinee with a 44.33 average, finishing the last half of the season playing as well as he has ever played. Darin Gardner, Devin Morin and Zac Miller rounded out the top five. The remainder of the team consisted of Dustin Sinclair, Griffin Marquis, Michael Baker, Nate Dyer, Kyle Dubay, Clara Treft and Sam Segee.

Orono High School was led by Justin O'Brien, Ryan Wells, Nathan Sinclair and Gary Morneault. They represented the Red Riots individually in every match throughout the season, and played in the team division of the PVC Conference Championship.

Every player for both teams worked hard at every practice, did everything they were asked to do, and had a 'grind it out' mentality at every match during the season. Everyone showed tremendous improvement as the season went along, as well as had a lot of fun.

Hermon Hawks, 171 (1-0); Old Town Coyotes, 200 (0-1)

The Hermon Hawks beat the Old Town Coyotes, 171 to 200 in the season opening high school golf match. The Hawks balanced play was led by Liam Porter with a 4-over-par 40, followed by Tyler Thayer with 42, Chris Dunbar Kelly with 44 and Chad Feeney with 45. Hazen Dauphinee led Old Town with 44. The Orono Red Riots also had three players competing as individuals representing the school. Justin O'Brien led the Red Riots with 49. Nathan Sinclair shot 61 and Gary Morneault fired a 62.

"Course management, pitching, chipping and putting are the four keys to scoring well, especially at this golf course," said Coyote coach Joe Perdue. "You can't try to blast a driver all the way around here and expect to do well. You have to pick your spots where it's okay to let it fly, and realize where it's better to lay up and leave yourself a short approach shot. Today was a great lesson for the team in that respect, and something we'll build on going forward.

"This was the first match ever for several of the kids, so in spite of how some of the scores might look, I was pleased with how they did, and how they got around the golf course."

The Old Town Coyotes varsity golf team improved their season record to 2-1 with wins over Mattanawcook and Foxcroft Academy at Hidden Meadows Golf Course on Thursday, August 30th.

Hazen Dauphinee led the Coyote golfers with a 5-over-par 40, followed by sophomore Darin Gardner, who shot 48. Mattanawcook's Nick Garfield took medalist honors with a 4-over-par 39. Luke Olson led Foxcroft Academy with 47. Nathan Sinclair was the leading player for Orono, firing a 56. Justin O'Brien and Gary Morneault followed with 63 and 69 respectively.

"We just finished our fall aerification this morning," said Joe Perdue, Old Town's coach, "so the greens presented a difficult challenge for everyone. Once we get a little water on them they will smooth back out and will be just fine. Unfortunately we just caught the course on one of those days where some annual maintenance had to be done. Under the circumstances, everyone did extremely well."

Co-medalists: Dauphinee, Foster 40

"The team made some nice progress today," said Old Town coach Joe Perdue. "We had five kids break 50 in a match for the first time. Slowly but surely they are eliminating mistakes that lead to blow-up holes, and everyone is playing a little bit smarter.

"Dauphinee had a solid round today. Garrett Libby is starting to get back on track and had a pretty steady round. Zac Miller and Devon Morin had their best competitive scores of the year.

Red Riot sophomore Justin O'Brien had 56 to lead Orono, followed by senior Nathan Sinclair with 59. "O'Brien has been playing for barely a year, and is doing very well considering his experience. He's starting to make a lot better contact with the ball and has picked up a considerable amount of distance with all of his clubs," said Perdue, who doubles as the Orono coach. "As he starts to understand more about golf, he is going to become a very good player. It just takes awhile to learn this game."

Mattanawcook (3-2): Nick Garfield, 36; Stefan Page, 51; Ashley Libby, 52; Elliott Sibley, 49; Tori Jordan, 50.

Old Town (5-1): Hazen Dauphinee, 40; Garrett Libby, 46; Darin Gardner, 47; Devan Morin, 47; Nate Dyer, 64; Griffin Marquis, 60; Michael Baker, 58; Dustin Sinclair, 56; Kyle Dubay, 67.

Orono: Justin O'Brien, 58; Ryan Wells, 53; Gary Morneault, 54.

Medalist: Nick Garfield, 36

The Old Town Coyotes won their fifth straight match, beating Mattanawcook 180-186 at Jato Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln. Hazen Dauphinee led a balanced Coyote effort with a 4-over-par 40, followed by senior Garrett Libby with 46. Devan Morin and Darin Gardner followed with 47. Nick Garfield fired an even par 36 for Mattanawcook to take the medalist honors.

"I was really impressed with Garfield from Mattanawcook," said Old Town Coach Joe Perdue. "Last year at the PVC's he got a case of the shanks and shot 127. It was so bad that on one hole he literally shanked about 9 shots all the way around a green. I felt horrible for the kid. As an instructor you want to help him, just so he can finish the round, but in that situation you just have to sit back and not say anything. He obviously got it figured out, didn't give up, and the two times he's played against us this year he has done very well. Shooting even par on the front 9 at Jato is an excellent score.

Perdue singled out efforts by Gardner and Morin, as well as Dustin Sinclair for Old Town. "Sinclair just took up the game last fall. He's been spending a lot of time on the practice range and he hit a lot of very nice shots at Jato.

"Ryan Wells and Gary Morneault also turned in excellent efforts today for Orono. Wells just returned from summer vacation in Canada and really starting driving the ball well. Morneault continues to improve, breaking 60 for the first time in a match. He just starting playing golf about a week before the season started, but by some of the swings he makes, you'd think he'd been playing a lot longer. He's also got the perfect temperament for golf. He doesn't seem to get rattled very easily."

Orono Red Riots: Justin O'Brien, 60; Nathan Sinclair, 61; Ryan Wells, 66; Gary Morneault, 75.

Medalist: Hazen Dauphinee, 40

"Dauphinee was really the only guy on his game today," said Coyote coach Joe Perdue. "He's been steady all year, and has a very solid all-around game. On rare occasion he'll make a double-bogey, but usually a bad hole for him is a bogey. He manages his game very well and just doesn't allow himself to have blow-up holes.

"Everyone just needs to keep working on their short games. In general, the kids are throwing away too many strokes around the greens, and more than anything, that's what's been keeping them from scoring better. We'll keep at it, and eventually it will come together."

"Garrett Libby and Darin Gardner both turned in outstanding efforts for Old Town," said Old Town coach Joe Perdue. "Garrett and I decided it would be best to take the driver out of his hands at this golf course, and outside of a triple-bogey on one of the par 3's, he had his best round in about two years. He's a really strong kid and has a very high clubhead speed. When he can learn to make that work for him, he has the capability of shooting some very very good scores."

Orono Red Riots: Ryan Wells 49, Justin O'Brien 49, Gary Moreneault 54.

Medalist: Dauphinee 39

"Considering the conditions, everyone from all three teams played extremely well today," said Coyote coach Joe Perdue. "The wind really picked up and had to have been gusting at 20 mph. All the boys and girls handled it very well and the scores were lower than what I would have expected.

"Dauphinee continued his steady play, breaking 40 in a match for the first time this year. Libby continued to improve, turning in his second straight 42 after starting the season not playing so well. Gardner and Miller both turned in excellent efforts with 45.

Perdue singled out Dustin Sinclair, Kyle Dubay, Clara Trefts and Sam Segee for their excellent play as well. "Kyle just started playing golf this fall, so for him to negotiate 9-holes in 54 is outstanding. Dustin broke 50 for the first time ever, and coming in conditions like this makes it even more impressive. Trefts and Segee played in their first matches ever, and I am extremely proud of their efforts. It's pretty darn cool to see them competing in a match when not all that long ago they didn't even know how to hold a golf club."

Ryan Wells and Justin O'Brien played very well today, both breaking into the 40's for the Red Riots. "This Orono team has two sophomores and a freshman that continue to improve, and they are building an excellent foundation for a team," said Perdue, who also coaches the Red Riots. "If we could get three or four more kids interested in turning out, we could get the golf program going full force again in the high school, which is something I'd really like to see."

At 7-2 the Coyotes are just one loss behind division leaders Hermon. Hermon travels to Old Town on Thursday for the season-ending match. "They have beat us 11 or 12 straight times over the past three years," according to Perdue. "A couple of times it was by only two or three shots, a couple of times by five or six. Overall, we've played them tough but we can't quite seem to get over the hump. With the division title on the line maybe it's time for things to change. The kids have certainly been working hard and have prepared well. Either way, it should be fun as well as a great learning opportunity and experience."

Medalist: Dauphinee 35

Hazen Dauphinee led the Old Town Coyotes to a narrow one stroke victory over the Hermon Hawks, helping the Coyotes to finish the season tied with Hermon atop the Central Division with identical 9-2 records.

"Hazen has been working hard on his game ever since I became the Old Town coach back in 2010," said Coyote coach Joe Perdue. "His father is his swing coach, and every year they pick out one area to concentrate on, then Hazen goes out and does it. All of that hard work came together during this match.

"He's been close to putting this kind of round together all season, playing five or six holes very well, then not finishing very strong. We spent a lot of time the past 10 days figuring out why he was having trouble finishing well. And today he broke through."

And the timing couldn't have been better. Hermon has gotten the best of Old Town the last 11 times the two teams have met. "They have just had our number these past three years," said coach Perdue. "Sometimes by two shots, a couple of times by three shots. Every match has been tight, with the exception of our first match of the year where they beat us by 30 shots. This time things just happened to go our way.

Garrett Libby had another strong match for Old Town, firing a 43. "Garrett figured a couple of things out with his swing the past two weeks, and he has improved his scoring average by six shots over that time," according to Perdue. "He, along with Darin Gardner, Devin Morin and Zac Miller have steadily improved as the season progressed, and gave this team just enough balance to tie for first place in our division. They have all worked consistently hard on every area of their games, and they should all be very proud of what they have accomplished."

Old Town travels to Jato Highlands Golf Course on Thursday, September 27th for the PVC Conference tournament. "I think this team has a great opportunity to qualify for the State tournament. We've got a practice round on Monday, where we'll work on course management and club selection, and then we'll go out Thursday and give it our best effort," said Perdue.

Hazen Dauphinee qualified for the state high school tournament by shooting 90 in the PVC championship at Jato Highlands Golf Course on Thursday. Dauphinee tied with two other golfers for the last open spot and won in a 3-hole playoff, making a clutch par putt on the 170-yard par 3 to seal his spot at the state competition, which is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th at Natanis Golf Course in Waterville.

Senior Garrett Libby missed the playoff by one stroke, firing a 91 after finishing his last three holes eight over par. Darin Gardner, Zac Miller and Devin Moran rounded out the scoring for Old Town.

"Hazen just had one of those days where he played poorly," said Old Town coach Joe Perdue. "It wasn't any one thing in particular. He'd miss a green, hit a poor chip or miss a putt. He just couldn't get things going.

Dauphinee survived the first playoff hole with a bogey when his opponent took three putts from inside of 15 feet, while his other opponent made a double-bogey. On the second playoff hole he couldn't get up-and-down from the back of the green, but his opponent had putting trouble again, missing a putt from less than two feet to extend the playoff to a third hole. After missing the green to the left, Dauphinee pitched up to about four feet. After his opponent failed to get up and down from the right rough, he drilled the par putt to win his ticket to the state competition.

"While it would have been nice for him to have played better in the conference tournament, ultimately the only thing that matters is getting to the state competition. Everyone starts all over again, so it really doesn't matter if he shot 70 or 90, he's earned his opportunity to compete for the state title.

"I feel bad for Garrett. after six holes he was one under par and just nailing all of his shots right on the button. But the back nine just gave him fits, where he made a couple of triple bogeys, along with a 10 on #18.

"When he came off of the 18th green, he had two holes left to play. He had just shot 53 on that side and was sitting at 17 over par. I told him the scores were high because of the wind, and that if he finished with two pars he would have a great chance to qualify. He hit a great tee shot on #1 (he started on #3, so #1 and #2 were his last two holes), but missed the green and couldn't get up and down. He did the same thing on #2, and ultimately missed the playoff by a stroke, finishing his round 38-53 for a 91.

"Everyone on this team worked hard all season long, and I am very proud of their efforts today," said Perdue. "Gardner, Miller and Morin will be back next season, so this experience will help them immensely next year when they are in the same position to compete for the chance to play at the state level.

2010 Team

The Old Town High School golf team had a successful 2010 season. Under the guidance of new coach Joe Perdue, the team went 6-3 and had one qualifier for the state tournament. Junior Sam Peabody led the team with a 41.89 9-hole scoring average, followed by seniors Casey Estes and Zac Madden. Peabody shot 94 at the state tournament in brutal weather conditions, and finished in the middle of the pack.
